Art at the House

We aim to involve local residents in creative activities and to promote Cliffe House and it’s grounds as a core, educational venue in the community.

Cliffe House is a property owned by Kirkless Council providing a range of activities designed to support the National Curriculum and providing a high quality and unique learning environment designed to inspire young people to learn.

It also provides excellent conference and meeting facilities available to hire for groups, colleges, businesses, individuals and the community.

The founder of ArtattheHouse has had a long connection with Cliffe House through his work with schools, and he developed a vision for using the outdoor buildings and grounds for an art event that would connect local artists and the community.  This event aims to make the most of the grounds in a way that would delight and engage visitors, encourage creative activities and support and promote local artists.

Join us at Calverley Old Hall Community Space to try something new in this full day workshop. Led by rag rugging tutor, Kim.

Join us at Calverley Old Hall Community Space to try something new in this full day workshop. Led by rag rugging tutor, Kim, from Darn It! Workshops, come along to join like-minded people to learn new skills, or develop your existing skills.

In this beginner friendly session you'll learn two versatile rag rug techniques which you will use to make a piece of wall art, homewares, a brooch or more. Kim will guide you through the techniques, advise you on your final piece design and support you throughout this friendly, sociable session.

Rag rugging is a technique traditionally used to turn rags into textural rugs. It is eco-friendly, often using recycled or re-used fabrics, whilst producing wonderful, colourful final pieces which can bring joy to your home.

As rag rugging can take some time to complete you may not finish your piece during the session (but if you opt to do a brooch you will do) but you will leave with the tools and skills to be able to complete it at home. There will be a wide range of fabric scraps, recycled materials, colourful rope, buttons and other things to choose from to make your own unique piece.

What to expect on the day

  • All equipment and materials will be provided.

  • Tea/coffee will be available, but all participants should bring their own packed lunch.

  • There are no food heating facilities, but there is a fridge to store your packed lunch in beforehand.

This workshop is for adults aged 18+.

Student/Low income/NHS worker discount
